London-based multidisciplinary artist Ruth Craig was born to first generation Irish and Indian immigrants. She graduated from UMIST with BSC (Hons) in Textile Design and Design Technology. Evolving from textile-based art and fabric design in her early career, Ruth developed a further artistic practice by applying her jacquard silk dye technique to ink-based paintings. As her methodology evolved, Ruth shifted her flat, fluid designs into three-dimensional clay sculpting. Nowadays, her primary medium is stone, though she explores her artistic practice with wax, clay and wood in her work’s developmental stages. Exploring identity, family relationships and the sociocultural issues that surround her life; migration, post-COVID, grief and love, the tactile aspect of her work is what brings her the most excitement. By encouraging spectators to interact with her stone pieces, a multi-generational connection is established between the centuries-old stone and the human hand placed upon them. Ruth has also written and illustrated three children’s books as well as animating a short film of her published work.
